Science

  The Institute occupies a leading role in the scientific assessment, analysis of problems, and development of recommendations for intergovernmental agreements on issues of global climate change, the Kyoto Protocol, the Paris Agreement, and the development of the Arctic and Antarctic. Staff of the Institute participate in the preparation of international reports on problems of climate change and sustainable development as experts, lead authors, and reviewers, including in the preparation of reports for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the UN Commission on Sustainable Development.

The primary objective of the A.M. Obukhov Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a Federal State Budgetary Institution of Science, is the execution of fundamental scientific research and applied developments in the field of atmospheric physics.

Main scientific research directions:

  • Diagnosis and modeling of climate; parameterization of climate-forming processes; investigation of the interaction of cloudiness, aerosol, and radiation; study of the interaction of the atmosphere with the underlying surface; study of regional climate changes.

  • Monitoring and investigation of the gaseous and aerosol composition of the atmosphere; forecast of possible consequences of changes in atmospheric composition for the environment and the Earth's climate.

  • Investigation of the dynamics of ecological systems and processes under conditions of a changing climate.

  • Investigation of atmospheric turbulence and processes of impurity transport in the atmospheric boundary layer; geophysical fluid dynamics.

  • Study of the dynamic and statistical characteristics of vortex and wave motions in the atmosphere; acoustic and internal gravity waves.

  • Satellite sounding of the atmosphere.

  • Monitoring of temporal and spatial changes in the state of the upper atmosphere.
