A.M. Obukhov Institute of Atmospheric Physics Russian Academy of Sciences

A.M. Obukhov Institute of Atmospheric Physics of Russian Academy of Sciences is one of the leading research centers in the world in the field of atmospheric science.

It was founded by Alexander Obukhov in 1956 to study basic processes in the atmosphere by means of achievements in physics, mechanics and applied mathematics.

The atmosphere is studied by up-to-date experimental, observational, physical, mathematical and computational methods.

The Institute comprises three research departments, which include 14 laboratories and three research field stations. The Institute's Academic Council holds regular meetings.

The Institute has had a Council of Young Scientists since 1968, which assists young researchers in their professional careers and with social matters. The Institute hosts a Postgraduate School (Aspirantura) and operates a Dissertation Council D 002.096.XX (24.1.130.01) for defending doctoral and candidate of science dissertations in the specialty 1.6.18 "Atmospheric and Climate Sciences" (prior to 2022, the Institute operated Dissertation Council D 002.096.02, specialty 25.00.29 - "Physics of the Atmosphere and Hydrosphere").

The Institute's staff publish papers in high-impact journals indexed in international and Russian databases and regularly participate in various expeditions.

Since 1965, the Institute has published the journal "Izvestiya, Atmospheric and Oceanic Physics".
